The Fourth Bear * * * / * * * *

The Fourth Bear by Jasper Fforde
wonderful
the return of Detective Chief Inspector Jack Spratt and Detective Sergeant Mary Mary of the Nursery Crime Division following up their success in The Big Over Easy about the Humpty Dumpty inquiry, this time Goldilocks is missing, there is a mystery about cucumbers and who is the Fourth Bear? referencing Nursery rhymes (well duh), Blade Runner and the theories of Joseph Campbell amongst others
SPOILER AFTER CUT

Blackwood Farm * * *

Blackwood Farm by Anne Rice (audio)
I've been listing to this book in dribs and drabs since July and just couldn't get into it and then I came back to it after a break and finally really enjoyed it.

I have my internet back, I have furniture (arrived but unassembled) and a fridge freezer (on the way) and I managed despite no internet to get my TMA (OU course work ) done and uploaded to their site thanks to Andy.
Plus the Democrats took both Houses of Congress. coooolio
And I'm beginning to get a handle on PHP and mySQL

Against Gravity * * / * * *

Against Gravity by Gary Gibson
Extremely predictable in places yet not bad. It got under my skin at times and I'm thinking I wouldn't have handled that scene like that. No particularly new ideas and all a bit sci fi Bond and Bond villain yet like Bond it has entertainment value.

SPOILER AFTER CUT
I was constantly irritated by Kendrick's insistance that Draeger should be trusted with no evidence why. I'm going to trust this character so we can move forward with the plot.

The Rainbow Gate * */ * * *

The Rainbow Gate by Freda Warrington
an odd book which I found hard going at first and yet by the end I was turning the pages quite bewitched.
To an extent some of the metaphors are rather transparent and some of the early pages have a rather amateurish feel to them. A number of times whilst reading the book I felt this is lousy and predictable, the writer has a tendency to tell rather than show, however always the narrative would do a little sidestep and I would think nice, yes that's good. It was like listening to a jazz improvisation, you're in the audience and chatting to friends and half listening and then bing something genuinely creative and interesting and even if you were in mid sentence you are suddenly paying maximum attention to the music.
